The Glass Blowing Art: What Is It?

The Glass Blowing: What Is It?

The art of glass blowing in China developed about 1000 years ago. The decorative metal brazing techniques and tools came from this region, which evolved into modern glass blowing.

Since ancient times, people blow glass to show off their skills. Some still do. The more advanced styles involve blowing a few sheets of glass and placing them on the surface of a glass plate, like in the South American colonial times.

After the Spanish Conquistadors left Spain, they brought their steel. These steel-tipped wands and staffs were used to fire a bullet into the ground with each blow. This practice evolved into the striking of the earth with the team to drill.

History Of Glass Blowing

In ancient times, the Japanese use fire to create molten glass. The process is called cherry blossom. It is quite different from modern blowing, where different molten metals are combined.

Old world blowing is still in use today. Some manufactures produce brass or copper, a metal that melts at about the same temperature as glass.

When these two metals are combined and blown at high pressure, they create a mighty explosion that moves the plates apart. This happens in a highly controlled and carefully planned process. You will have to be a very observant glass blower to notice it, which is why I refer to it as controlled explosions.

Blast Welding

Blast welding is an advanced technique. During the blast welding process, gas is shot through a tube to heat a piece of steel or even plastic to several hundred degrees. At this temperature, a small section of the material splits, which can be used to create a new mold. It can be used to create anything from blown glass to metal, plastic, ceramic, and even wood.

A full process can create not only a new mold but a new piece of glass. With some high tech glass-blowing machines, the finished product can be created in many different shapes. The parts can create windows, moldings, and crafts.

While these types of techniques create single pieces, it is more to create more significant, more fragile parts of glass. Because of the range of shapes that can be created, glass blowing has become one of the most versatile forms of art.

New Techniques

Since the different people who do this style of glass blowing are combining it with other techniques, new ways of making items have evolved. You can use air compression, induction heating, or the different types of gas welders. Also, you can find new materials such as a polymer that you can use for cutting.

Some of the new materials for different blowing methods are made from rubber, craft paper, and fabrics. There are so many variations that the possibilities are endless. You need to keep up with the technology.

If you are interested in trying your hand at creating your own glass blowing pieces, then the best place to start is with an online glass blowing course. Even if you do not have the right tools to create your glass pieces, you can still learn how to make your own.
