The use of glass in everyday life has made it an important part of our lives. Every shaped glass goes through the process of glass blowing. With its history as old as two thousand years, the process has gone through several changes. As more inventions have happened, both cheap and costly glasswares have filled the market. Glass plays a major role in every house’s interior. From a miniature sized artifact to large pieces of statues, all go through the glass blowing process. The three main stages of the same include the furnace, glory hole, and annealer. By now, you must be curious to know the detailed process of blowing. Let us check the process of blowing glass.

First Stage Of Glass Blowing: The Furnace

The malleability character of glass gives it an upper hand in making different shapes. The glass furnace places the glass in the first furnace. Then they heat it around 2000 degrees until the glass melts. Crucible is the residue. The artist then takes the crucible and spreads it on a flat surface. You can place this molten glass on a marver to shape it a bit. This process is to make the glass more malleable. Cooling it a bit is advisable to reheat later.

The Glory Hole Phase

The glory hole holds the significant purpose of shaping the molten glass. You can place the glasses in the furnace. Here the artist starts blowing into the malleable glass and shapes the temperature of this furnace has to be regulated properly. It might make the artist move a lot in the factory, trying to maintain the right temperature. You can add desired colors and effects after this. It is an important process that decides the final output.

After this, the artist starts blowing again and aims for perfect glassware. This is the glass is hot.

The Role Of Annealer In Glass Blowing

An annealer or Lehr is generally the third furnace used in the process. This furnace cools the glasswork done by the artist. It is done by slow cooling of the shaped glass. The blowing heats the glass, and hence slow cooling is needed. It helps in avoiding any cracks or damage to the glass. It is how a glass artifact goes through different stages of the furnace.
