Free-Blowing

This method is one of the most famous methods of glass-forming. And artist majorly uses this for their creation. The glassworker blows short puffs of air into a gather, which has been spooled at one end of the blowpipe. 

In the ancient free-blowing technique, glassworkers used clay blowpipes. The Portland Vase made in the Roman period is one of the classic examples of this technique. A skillful glassworker can mold and shape any vessel. Thus, glassworkers use these techniques to create different products like drinking glasses, cups, glasses for windows and doors, etc. 

Mold-Blowing 

This was an alternative option of free-blowing. It was found after the introduction of the free-blowing technique. The glassworker puts a semi-liquid piece of molten glass on the edge of a blowpipe and then increase its size into a craved mold. 

It is important to note that one should always follow a few safety measures when taking glasswork classes. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Safety Measures For Glass Work Classes

  • When it comes to clothes, wear fibers like cotton or wool. Do not choose to wear synthetic fibers.
  • Choose to wear long pants.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. Make sure to cover your feet properly. 
  • Protecting your eyes is a must. There is the eyewear that is specially meant for this purpose.
  • Be careful and don’t burn yourself. The glass can be very hot in the molten state and there are chances that you might hurt yourself. 
  • Anything that is being used in the process of glass making eventually turns out to be hot. Thus this may cause burns. So, you should be careful in handling all the equipment. 
  • Lifting and placing the glass should be done with extra care. Cover your hands properly while holding it. 
  • Put some cushion or any piece of cloth below the glass. Do not place it directly. 
  • Carry some medicine like ointments for any case of emergency. 

Remember to bring some snacks with you while attending your glass work classes. This can be tiring work.
